TIDBITS HISTORY
Tidbits began in a small town in Montana, in the late 1980's. Dave Steele saw the paper and fell in love with the concept; so in 1993 he bought the rights to the name "Tidbits". He hired the original writer and he began publishing Tidbits of Billings, Montana. When readers picked up the paper they too fell in love with it and many asked how they could publish Tidbits in their town. Soon Dave began to sell publishing rights (licenses) to other publishers, and over the years built a nationwide family of Tidbits papers numbering well over 100. In April of 2002 Tidbits Media, Inc. of Montgomery, Alabama was formed to purchase Tidbits from Dave Steele, and the company headquarters was moved there the same year. The present owners continue the publisher licensing business model, but have added significant training and home-office support. They have the goal of making TIDBITS a nationally recognized brand.
Tim and Julie Schroeder of Fort Wayne brought Tidbits to Allen County in December of 2006. While living in Parkersburg, West Virginia, they saw a Tidbits paper being published there and immediately fell in love with it. They especially liked that their four small children could enjoy Tidbits without having to worry about the content of the paper. It was a good, clean entertainment paper the whole family could enjoy. After moving here they were looking for something to generate more income and agreed that Tidbits would be a good choice. They are pleased to report that Tidbits of Allen County has been successful and has a strong readership of 8,500 per week.
Presently there are about 250 Tidbits publishers across the United States with a weekly readership of over 4 million. Tidbits can be found in 36 states, even Alaska!
At the local level, the mission of Tidbits is to entertain people while they wait. Some have called it a "lunch counter magazine", but it is more properly referred to as a "weekly entertainment tabloid".
